For a Undergraduate, Master or PHD in the USA, which is better: IELTS or TOEFL?
Survey reveal that the majority of Universities in the United States of America prefer TOEFL scores over other English Language Tests.
If you want to go master in the USA, and you are deciding which English language test you should write, remember the test are only to test your English language proficiency, and they are several English Language Tests which include TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, DUALINGO, etc.
The TOEFL offers only academic English, while the IELTS offers a general test also. This test is more preferred for immigration purposes to the UK and Canada. And overall, the IELTS has more of a real-world feeling than the TOEFL.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN IELTS AND TOEFL
Both the tests are useful to accurately measure the English proficiency of a student. These are widely accepted throughout the universities of the world. Please note that the tests are slightly different in their approach. If you are planning an MSC. abroad.
One difference is that students take the IELTS on paper, while most of the TOEFL Test is on a computer. According to the TOEFL website, 97 percent of people who take the TOEFL take the iBT, or internet-based test, as opposed to the paper version.
While IELTS scores are accepted by over 9,000 Institutions worldwide. The IELTS is not taken as often as the TOEFL for students looking to attend grad school in the United States and is more popular overseas, such as in the United Kingdom and Australia, but many American schools still accept TOEFL scores. For me TOEFL’s test structure and system is more academically focused, Test Prep, but the IELTS has a more real-world communication feel.
However, this doesn’t mean the IELTS is easier test to pass, and they are several English language test to available but the two most accepted exams are the English Language Tests, are the International English Language Tests and the Test of English as a foreign Language (TOEFL) test.
Although the IELTS and TOEFL exams are assessing the same English Language test , the marking of the exams is slightly different for each of the 4 sections: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Both TOEFL and IELTS are split into 4 sections: Writing, Listening, Speaking and Reading. TOEFL usually takes around 4 hours, but IELTS is usually shorter than that – at around 2 hours 45 minutes
TOEFL is a multiple-choice-only reading section.
IELTS has a range of 15 question types including short answer, true/false, summary and multiple choice. With IELTS, you can select to take the Academic paper or the non-academic one
Since we know that The TOEFL is more accepted by universities in the united states, and the IELTS is more commonly accepted overseas, especially in the European universities like United Kingdom, Germany, Netherlands, etc. but many universities accept scores from either exam. However, a choosing a university preference might be the right thing to do, but If a university does not have any preference, you can choose any of the English language test either it TOEFL or the IELTS.
Each of the test has both sections in the TOEFL, IELTS have the Listening, Writing, Reading, And Speaking Sections for student to write.
